About TAPP Next
Overview
TAPP Next prepares school specialists to implement the Teachers and Parents as Partners (TAPP) intervention in their schools and communities, promoting students’ social and behavioral successes and family-school partnerships.
Our research team provides individualized professional development to bring TAPP to schools across the U.S. Our goals are to support school specialists as they deliver TAPP and promote positive school outcomes for students they serve.
School specialists, teachers and parents enrolled in the study are paid for their participation.

Why do we need TAPP Next?
When families and schools work together, students succeed. Family-school partnerships are effective at addressing social-behavioral and academic challenges that make teaching and learning difficult. TAPP Next equips school specialists with the tools they need to deliver TAPP in their schools where the need is high and resources may be scarce.
Participant Details
Your involvement in TAPP can have a significant positive impact on a child’s success at school and in life. Participation is voluntary and all information collected is kept confidential. Here is what to expect as a study participant.
How does it work?
- School specialists agree to participate in the study and receive free professional development and personalized coaching.
- Research staff collaborate with schools to identify Pre-K–Grade 6 teachers of students with behavioral and/or academic concerns. In collaboration with school personnel, research staff help connect with parents, explain the procedures and obtain permissions to participate.
- Participating teachers and families are randomly placed in one of two groups:
- School Services + TAPP
- Typical School Services
- All participants complete some surveys assessing students’ behaviors, current practices and family-school partnerships.
- All specialists, teachers and parents receive generous compensation for their participation. See handouts linked below for details.
School Services + TAPP
- School specialists are trained in TAPP and receive a certificate upon completion.
- Specialists meet with teachers and parents together to problem-solve barriers and help develop plans and resources. The TAPP meetings are approximately 50 minutes each and take place over about 8 weeks.
- Specialists, teachers and parents co-create student behavior plans that are meaningful and feasible to help students meet their goals.
- Specialists receive ongoing coaching and support from research staff via distance technology for all their TAPP casework.
TAPP Later
- Students, teachers and parents continue receiving support from school specialists and other staff.
